“Many people lead bad lives that would gladly lead good ones, but know not how to make the change.”

– Benjamin Franklin

I wasn’t always health-conscious. In fact, when I look back at my life, it seems as if I was doing everything I could to destroy my health. I had a lot of degenerative habits and addictions:

  • I drank heavily
  • I smoked cigarettes
  • I used all kinds of recreational drugs
  • I lived on pizza
  • And I did other things that caused a lot of stress, such as daily sports betting, which created financial stress and relationship problems

All of this added up and by the time I graduated college, I felt exhausted.

What Does it Mean to Be Healthy?

It wasn’t until one day, when I was searching for a way to get rid of warts, that I discovered what it means to be healthy. I was in Barnes and Noble and I picked up one of those natural remedy books, and the very first page that I opened the book to was describing what a healthy person looks and feels like. It said things like:

  • Healthy people don’t get sick often.
  • Healthy people don’t have many colds, sore throats, and headaches.
  • Healthy people recover easily from stressful situations.
  • Healthy people have a good attitude, positive outlook, happy disposition, etc.
  • Healthy people have natural energy and don’t rely on coffee or stimulants.
  • Healthy people don’t need to be drugged to sleep, and so on.

In short, healthy people don’t have any of the problems that we consider normal.

I certainly did not fit that description. After reading this book, I started to realize how far away from health I was. It always bothered me that I needed coffee, drugs, alcohol, or some other substance to feel alive. But I never realized that I was attracted to these things because I had no real energy.

I didn’t end up finding a cure for warts, but I did learn about a new standard of health that I wanted to work towards.

Navigating the World of Health and Wellness

I began reading about nutrition and experimenting with different diets and supplements. But it was very chaotic in the beginning. There was no structure to my approach. I ended up with a bag full of pills, potions, powders, and tinctures, but I had no idea if any of them were helping.

Finding the right diet wasn’t easy, either. I read Joel Fuhrman’s book Super Immunity, which recommended a vegetarian diet, and so I started eating a plant-based diet. A few weeks later, I read Primal Body, Primal Mind by Nora T. Gedgaudas, which recommended a paleo diet. So, after being a vegetarian for two weeks, I was once again a meat-eater.

The problem is that both arguments were convincing. As anyone who’s tried to improve their health knows, the amount of contradictory information about what’s good for you can be overwhelming. The more I read, the more confused I became!

There are, however, a few health principles that most people agree on. Some things are obviously not healthy. And so I stopped drinking, smoking, and eating processed foods. I also began going to sleep earlier and simplifying my lifestyle.

The Nutritional Balancing Healing and Development System

As I continued to research, I discovered the work of Dr. Lawrence Wilson. He had a program called nutritional balancing, which he now calls the development method.

His approach made a lot of sense to me because it wasn’t about finding a remedy for a particular health problem. Instead, it was about rebalancing and strengthening your body chemistry, and improving cellular energy production. As a result of improving your overall health, most health problems and symptoms go away on their own, without having to focus on them or deal with them specifically.

The other interesting thing about this system is that your program is personalized for your specific needs based on the results of a hair test called hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA). This means that there’s much less guessing involved when trying to determine which foods and nutrients you need to optimize your health. This test can save you from wasting years of trial-and-error with various remedies and supplements.

I started using this system to restore my health with good results. My test results made it clear that I had a lot of healing to do. In time, the program has resolved my hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), relieved muscle tension and pain, cleared up chronic congestion, restored my energy and mental clarity, and has improved my life in countless other ways.

Starting a Nutrition Practice

I found the nutritional balancing system so interesting and helpful that I decided to do training and eventually open a nutrition practice to help others with their health.

Starting a business was not easy for me. I had to learn various skills (apart from my trade) and challenge myself in uncomfortable ways. I struggled for a long time. But I am happy I stuck with it because today I am much more comfortable doing this work. It is also rewarding to be able to help others who are suffering and looking for answers.

What You Can Learn from My Journey

That’s the short version of how I became interested in health and wellness. Here are three things that you can learn from my journey:

1. Your current habits affect your future health.

You may think that many of the bad habits that I had early in my life are just part of a typical high school and college experience. And maybe that’s true for many people. But those behaviors have a detrimental effect on your health that most people never fully recover from. I hope my story encourages you to do what’s necessary to rebuild your health and move on to more meaningful, healthy, and wholesome life adventures.

2. Health is a proactive effort.

You don’t create health by leaving it to chance, and then just going to the doctor when you have a problem. You need to cultivate healthy habits. This takes some discipline, commitment, and a willingness to change your preferences.

3. Most people (including doctors) have a very low standard of health.

The way that modern medical care portrays health is a joke. That is, if you do not have a diagnosable disease, then you are generally considered healthy. The truth is that there are many levels of health. And there’s a lot you can do to improve your health and overcome your health problems. Most people have no idea how good they can feel.
