Step 1: Prepare Your Hair for Sampling

  • Wash your hair within 24 hours of your appointment. It is best to wash your hair the same day of your appointment to avoid contamination.
  • Wash your hair with regular shampoo. Do not use dandruff shampoos (Head & Shoulders, Selsun Blue) or other medicated shampoos, as these contain minerals that will alter the test.
  • Avoid adding conditioner or other hair products after you have washed your hair. Also, avoid any activity that will cause you to sweat excessively after you have washed your hair.
  • Allow enough time for your hair to dry. Your hair needs to be dry by the time of your appointment.
  • IF YOUR HOME HAS A WATER SOFTENER: Showering in water treated by water softeners that use sodium or potassium tablets can alter your test results. Before sampling your hair, wash your hair at least three times (three consecutive days) with distilled or reverse osmosis water from the supermarket. Do not allow softened water on your hair between washings.
  • IF YOU USE DANDRUFF SHAMPOO: Dandruff shampoos can elevate your zinc (Head & Shoulders) and selenium (Selsun Blue) readings. Wash your hair with regular shampoo three consecutive times after using these products before taking a sample.
  • IF YOU TINT OR DYE YOUR HAIR: Some dyes contain minerals, so it is best to take the sample before dying your hair, or allow your hair to grow out about one inch before taking a hair sample.
  • IF YOU BLEACH OR PERM YOUR HAIR: Bleach and permanent treatments can damage the hair, so it is best to sample you hair before a treatment, or allow your hair to grow out about one inch before taking a hair sample.
